Nature Walk

·         Go on a nature walk with your family.

·         Take a notebook to draw what you observe, pencil and ruler.

·         Find at least three different plants.

o   Draw what each plant looks like.

o   Label each part of the plant (i.e. flower, stem, leaves, and roots).

o   Measure different parts of the plant to the nearest inch or centimeter and add these measurements to your drawings.

·         After your walk, research the plants you observed on http://kids.britannica.com/

Narrative Journal Writing

·         Keep a summer journal by writing a narrative for different days throughout your summer.

·         Each day think about including a “Brilliant Beginning”, “Mighty Middle” and “Excellent Ending.”

·         Include details of where you go, who you see, and what you do.

Sink or Float? Discovery Learning at the Pool

·         Before going to the pool, collect several small items from around the house to take for this experiment.  Make a list of the items and predict whether you believe each item will sink or float.

·         At the pool, test each item in the pool (one at a time) to see whether it did sink or float.  *Remember to do your test in the shallow end in case the item sinks to the bottom.*

·         After the pool, compare the weights of the items you tested by weighing them on a scale.  Did the weight of the item have any impact on whether the items would sink or float?  Look carefully at how each item was made.  Did the way the item was made have any impact on whether the items would sink or float?

Family Game Nights

·         Choose different nights throughout the summer for “Family Game Nights”.

·         Think back to some of your favorite Math Games from 1st Grade (Top-It, Addition Top-It, Beat the Calculator).  Go to www.everydaymathonline.com if you need to look up any other games or review the game rules.  All of this information can be found by using your Everyday Math Login and searching the Interactive My Reference Book.

·         Play board games like Scrabble, Bananagrams, and Boggle

Other Literacy Activities

·         Read from “Good Fit” books for an hour or more each week.

·         Participate in the Public Library’s Summer Reading Program

·         Write letters or e-mails to your friends, family members, and/or teachers from previous years.  They would love to hear from you!

·         Try your hand at poetry!  Write poems or tongue twisters and share with your friends and family!  Read silly poems by authors such as Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky.

·         Write a book recommendation and send it to a friend.

·         Turn on the Closed Captioning Option when watching TV.

·         Cut out newspaper stories and cut off the headlines.  Then try to match them with the right stories.  Try writing your own headlines.  Underline facts in blue in, opinions in red.

Chinese learning apps:

Feed Me: Little learners watch a purple monster think up a question and then they need to feed the monster the correct answer. Questions asked are about shapes, numbers, colors, sorting, math, and more.

Learn Chinese: Toy Story 3: This is a leveled learning app which teaches Mandarin with the familiar Disney story Toy Story. There are 5 different levels, from 100% English, to 100% Chinese/Pinyin.

Mandarin Flash Cards: It is a flashcard-based app. The game is challenging. Similar to the Rosetta Stone style of learning, four images are shown on the screen and the user needs to figure out which picture represents the audio question. When the user gets the answer right, the narrator tells you in Chinese that you did a good job, crosses out the three other images and moves onto the next question. If you get the answer wrong, users can keep on going through the four pictures until he gets the right one.

2Kids Chinese: Help kids learn Chinese characters. The game is helpful.

Kids Animal Clock: This app teaches kids time in Mandarin.

Audio books (with words and pictures) are excellent for your kid to read and listen to the book at the same time.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math):
Engage your child this summer with STEM ( science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Challenge them to draw a design which they then build using supplies which you designate (like masking tape + straws or notecards, wooden block, Legos, etc. ) A bridge is a more advanced challenge for older children. Incorporate Math by giving them a height or width goal or having them measure the final construction. THEN have them IMPROVE their design using their new engineering skills.
